Average Household Size, May 2023

East-West Gateway’s May 2023 Map of the Month shows average household sizes across the region. The five-year American Community Survey (2021) estimates that there are 1,055,327 households in the region, with an average household size of 2.42. Jefferson County’s average household size of 2.62 is the largest among counties in the EWG region. The city of St. Louis has the smallest average household size, with 2.08. The counties of Franklin, Monroe, St. Charles, and St. Clair all have average household sizes that are above the regional average. Madison County and St. Louis County are both below the regional average.

Areas with the lowest average household sizes tend to have a high concentration of multi-family housing. These include the Central Business District, the western edge of University City, and city neighborhoods with a large university presence such as Midtown and the Central West End. Areas with the largest household sizes include Wentzville in western St. Charles County, East St. Louis in St. Clair County, and Florissant in North St. Louis County.
