WATERSHEDS

Labarque CreekA watershed is an area of land where the runoff from rain or snow will ultimately drain to a particular stream, river, wetland or other body of water. There are nine major watersheds in the St. Louis region which drain into the Mississippi River and the Missouri River.  Nested within these watersheds can be found smaller watersheds of creeks or streams and those segments of land which drain directly into the nine major watersheds.  The following sections delineate the watersheds in the St. Louis region, discuss watersheds and watershed based natural resource planning and describe the actions the general public and local governments can take to improve water quality in their watersheds.

WATERSHEDS CONCEPTS

The Missouri Department of Conservation prepared a series of fact sheets describing the effects of typical development on water resources and outlining steps an individual or community can take to reduce these impacts and ways to cope with stormwater runoff.  Watershed conservation and nonpoint source water pollution control techniques have also been developed.

WATERSHED PLANNING

The watershed management approach takes into account the specific water resource (stream, river, lake) and the surrounding land from which Click here to view a typical watershed representationthe water drains.  Land use planning is one of a series of tools which can help to protect, maintain and restore the natural environment by directing development toward areas which can support a particular type of land use and/or density.  Planning tools can be used to balance water conservation and land use development.

WATERSHED STEWARTSHIP

Watershed stewardship involves the direct engagement of the public, local government staff and local officials about the effects of stormwater runoff and nonpoint pollution on water quality.  It, also, involves educating the general public and elected officials as to the actions they can take to improve water quality in their watersheds. Listed below are several links to help facilitate this process.
