This year’s activities center around national, regional and local models of watershed management. The Symposium was co-sponsored by the
Missouri Department of Conservation and St. Louis Earth Day.
A watershed tour of Labarque and Fox Creeks on Friday, April
18th, 2003, kicked off a week of events surrounding our annual Water Symposium held on Earth Day, April 22, 2003. The Clean Water, Livable Cities: Models that Work
symposium included an abbreviated version of a workshop offered nationally called “Bridge Design: Crossing Creeks and Rivers Structures;” a roundtable discussion about issues related to governance,
water quality, development and other municipal needs; an update on local stormwater plans and model
practices; and watershed and greenway initiatives in Missouri and Illinois.
Also offered during the week was a technical seminar, conducted by Bruce Ferguson, on infiltration methods to control runoff and improve
water quality. This seminar was co-sponsored by the American Society of Civil Engineers-St. Louis Section and the American Public Works Association-St. Louis Chapter.
Over 170 people attended the Missouri River barge trip on Friday, May 2, 2003. While
floating along the river of Lewis and Clark, participants learned about new parks, trails and other efforts to protect and enhance the river.
