St. Louis Earth Day, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and the Metropolitan Parks and Recreation District hosted their third Barge Trip on Friday,
May 2, 2003. Over 170 people boarded the barge at the Melvin Price Lock & Dam in Alton, Illinois. While traveling along the Missouri River, passengers heard from the following speakers about plans to improve
trails, parks, and water quality in the bi-state region:
- Steve Nagle, East-West Gateway Coordinating Council
- David Wilson, East-West Gateway Coordinating Council
- Karla Wilson, St. Louis Earth Day
- John Pozzo, Ameren UE
- Ron Kucera, Missouri Department of Natural Resources
- James Gulliford, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Region VII
- David Fisher, Metropolitan Parks & Recreation District
David Fisher spoke of planned parks and greenways as an "emerald necklace" that will enhance the St. Louis region.
In attendance were State Representatives, local and county government officials, and representatives of state, non-profit, and for-profit
organizations. Local government officials attended from the following cities:
- Alton
- Arnold
- Bridgeton Parks
- Chesterfield
- Florissant
- Hazelwood
- Ladue
- Maryland Heights
- St. Peters
- Sunset Hills
Participants celebrated the St. Louis region's unique location at the confluence of major rivers and used the networking opportunity to further the
collaboration that is necessary to protect and enhance a valuable natural resource - our rivers.
