Short-Range Transportation Plan

Bicycle and Pedestrian Program

East West Gateway Council of Governments is striving to improve conditions for bicycles and pedestrians across the region. The Bicycle and Pedestrian Program is our way of attempting to address some these issues. Current projects include:

  • Development of a Level of Service Map for Bicyclists – Using the Bicycle Compatibility Index this project seeks to measure the comfort level of the average cyclist on roadways throughout the region. When finished, a map will be produced that will help cyclists determine the best on road routes to use when traveling to different destinations in the region.
     
  • The St. Louis Regional Bicycle and Pedestrian Advisory Committee (BPAC) – the committee advises the East-West Gateway Coordinating Council on bicycle and pedestrian transportation issues. History and Membership

History: The BPAC was established by the East-West Gateway Coordinating Council in July of 1995 based on the recommendations set forth in the St. Louis Region Bicycle Facilities Plan. The Plan was adopted by the EWGCC Board of Directors in April of 1995.

The guiding mission of the BPAC is to enhance access and mobility throughout the region by encouraging the coordinated development of bicycle and pedestrian facilities, programs, and activities that will enhance safe access to major residential areas, educational, government and cultural institutions, employment and retail activity centers, as well as parks and recreational areas.

Membership: The BPAC represents a cross-section of public, private, and non-profit representatives from the region. Advisory Committee members include: planning officials from the region's municipalities, county and state transportation departments; representatives from the region's principal universities and employment sites; individuals from key public interest and advocacy groups; and individuals representing the general public and cycling community.
