ST. LOUIS COUNTY, MISSOURI
St. Louis County was established in 1876, covers 507.8 square miles and had a 2000 population of 1,016,315, making it the most populous jurisdiction in the region. As of the November, 2000 general election there were 726,325 registered voters in St. Louis County comprising 95.5% of the voting age population. There were 404,312 households in the county with an average size of 2.47 persons and the median age of residents was
37.5 years. Median household income was $50,532 annually with 5.1% of county families and 6.9% of the total population with incomes below the poverty level. 84.9% of workers drove to work alone and 1.7% took public transportation to work. The City of Saint Louis voted to separate itself from St. Louis County in 1876 so the two are completely separate units of government. About 67.4% of county residents live in incorporated areas and the rest in
unincorporated areas. There are 90 municipalities in St. Louis County with various forms of local government from Boards of Trustees to first class cities with a Mayor and City Council.
