ST. CHARLES COUNTY, MISSOURI

St. Charles County began to be settled in the 1760's  and was established as one of Missouri's five original counties in 1812. The county rippelmeyer1covers 560.4 square miles and had a 2000 population of 283,883. As of the November, 2000 general election there were 186,710 registered voters in St. Charles County comprising 92.6% of the voting age population. There were 101,663 households in the county with an average size of 2.76 persons and the median age of residents is 34.3 years. Median household income was $57 ,258 annually with 2.8% of county families and 4.0% of the total population with incomes below the poverty level. 87.1% of workers drove to work alone and .3% took public transportation to work. The county seat is the City of St. Charles. The county is governed by a County Executive with a seven member County Council and has 17 municipalities. St. Charles County is the fastest growing county in the state of Missouri, gaining over 71,000 residents from 1990 to 2000, this on top of more than 100,000 from 1980 to 1990.  While many of the residential and business developments in the county are relatively new, St. Charles is among the oldest settled areas of the state.  As one of the original counties , St. Charles at one time comprised a significant portion of the state of Missouri.  It was subsequently reduced to its current borders as other areas were settled and communities formed.  The City of St. Charles was the temporary capital of Missouri from 1821-1826 until Jefferson City was made the permanent capital city.  Today's St. Charles County is a rapidly developing modern community with everything from major shopping centers, manufacturing of automobiles and computer chips, quaintly restored old St. Charles and small Missouri wineries to riverboat gaming.  Some of the attractions in St. Charles County are the August A. Busch Conservation area, Daniel Boone's Home, the Lewis and Clark Center, Missouri's first Capital, and  the Goldenrod Showboat.
