On Wednesday, August 20, 2003, a group of South County community leaders took a ride on St. Louis' premier light-rail system. For most it was their first time on MetroLink. According to Marilyn Ferkel, of the South County Chamber of Commerce, the experience was "informational and enlightening."
Participants met at the Lemay Chamber of Commerce for a brief presentation before taking a bus to the Laclede's Landing station. Once there, they boarded MetroLink and rode to Lambert Airport and back. Barbara Hehmeyer, Executive Director of the Lemay Chamber of Commerce and first-time rider, remarked, "I had no idea how well utilized it was." Lance Welling, of Metropolitan Congregations United, described MetroLink as "clean, easily accessible, with a high level of security."
Joyce Timmons, from the Village of Marlborough, says she has always been impressed with MetroLink, and is trying to encourage her grandson to get used to using it. That won't be too difficult. Her 10-year-old grandson, who accompanied her on the ride, was very excited about MetroLink and perhaps summed up the experience best when he exclaimed, "This was fun!"
