MEDIA ADVISORY “WALKABLE COMMUNITIES” WORKSHOP TO BE HELD WEDNESDAY, MAY 13 AT MISSOURI HISTORICAL SOCIETY LIBRARY & RESEARCH CENTER The East-West Gateway Coordinating Council’s (EWGCC) Regional Bicycle and Pedestrian Advisory Committee is hosting a “Walkable Communities” workshop
on Wednesday, May 13 from 8:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. at the Missouri Historical Society Library & Research Center at 225 South Skinker Blvd. Enhancing the quality of life by providing opportunities for transportation alternatives is an issue being taken up by metropolitan areas across the country. This highly visual workshop showcases techniques for designing better streets and neighbohoods, strategies for reducing traffic speeds, and other approaches for transforming our streets
into thriving places once again. This discussion of mobility issues impacting pedestrian, bicycle, and disabled travel in our region will be led by Dan Burton, a national recognized expert on issues regarding transportation alternatives to the automobile. The media is invited to attend.
The workshop will cover the following issues: Background on Transportation: safety, human factors, laws & ordinances
Engineering: Intersections, ADA, traffic calming, medians, sidewalks, signalization Economic Development: pedestrian-friendly retail strategies, improving business access In addition to the East-West Gateway Coordinating Council, this event is being co-sponsored by Citizens for Modern Transit, the Missouri Department of Transportation, Creve Coeur Transportation Management Association, St. Louis Wheelchair Athletic Association, Bi-State Development Agency, and the
