An Illinois Levee Summit convened in August 2007 to provide an overview of the levee systems in the St. Louis region and described levee deficiencies and flood risks in the Illinois portion of the region. The Illinois levees have significant underseepage problems that significantly increase the risk of a major flood. This has led to the decertification of the regional levee system. Read more here about what’s being done to eliminate this problem.
