East-West Gateway staff participate in many community engagement activities in order to better understand and represent the needs and concerns of regional citizens and to engage citizens in our regional problem-solving activities. Our commitment and approach are based on four important beliefs:
- Citizens should know how decisions are made about the investment of tax dollars in public projects.
- Individuals and communities impacted by the outcome of regional decisions want to have their opinions and perspectives taken into consideration.
- Planners cannot maintain current and relevant knowledge about regional
problems without learning from citizens directly affected.
- The best plans are those that reflect a reasonable balance between local and regional priorities, such as equity, cost-effectiveness, and metropolitan growth.
How We See It
The 2005 How We See It Citizens Survey questioned a representative sample of 1,385 residents from the St. Louis region. Topics included citizens’ perceptions about family well-being, public services, community and regional life, and more. Some of the questions have been compared to East-West Gateway’s original citizens’ survey of 1992, and others have been benchmarked to findings of a recent national survey.
